AI answering for your Google listing calls. They found you. Then they rang.
Your listing has one job on a phone screen, and it is the Call button. Somebody comparing three firms presses it, and whoever picks up is usually the one who gets the work. Carrie picks up, every time. At ten at night, at six in the morning, and in the middle of a job when both your hands are full.
Your listing sends you calls and visits to your website, and Google counts both. The call is the one worth money, and this page is about what happens to it.

What happens when somebody rings you off Google?
A Google listing sends you calls and visits to your website, and so does a Bing Places listing, which is the one nearly every agency forgets. The call is the one worth money, and it is answered on the first ring instead of ringing out.
Customers are comparing three of you
Searching for what you do, near where they are, with three listings side by side and a Call button on each one. It is the most competitive moment there is, and it is over quickly.
Carrie picks up before they ring the next one
Your business name, an answer to what they asked, then what the job is, where they are and how to reach them. All while you are still with the customer in front of you.
The enquiry lands with the rest of your work
On the same list as the texts, the emails and the website chats, with a note saying it came off your listing so you know what is actually working.
What it looks like
Somebody in Great Cornard searches for what you do at twenty to nine on a Tuesday evening, once the children are down and she has finally sat down. Three listings come up and yours is one of them. She presses Call on the first one.
Yours answers. By the time she has finished her tea you have her name, her address and what needs doing, and the other two rang out into the dark.
What people ask about Google and the phone
Thirteen, starting with what your listing actually sends you now. The same answering works off a Bing Places listing, which is what feeds ChatGPT and Copilot.
What does my Google listing actually send me now?
Calls and visits to your website, and Google counts both for you. Google discontinued Business Messages on 31 July 2024 and removed the chat history from Business Profiles the same day. So the call is the one worth money, and it gets answered on the first ring.
So what exactly is this?
The calls that come off your Google listing get answered instead of ringing out. Your business name, the question answered, the job details taken, and the lead on your phone before you are down the ladder.
Is this an extra channel I have to pay for?
No. A call from your Google listing is a phone call, and phone answering is in the base price rather than an add-on. One call is one call, wherever it came from.
What happens to a Google call after the button is pressed?
Your listing is where those calls come from, so this is where the work is. Being found is half the job. Being answered is the half that pays.
Is this the same as Google Business Profile optimisation?
No, and it matters. Running the profile is a person's job here and that person is me. The categories, the services, the areas, the photographs, the questions and the replies to reviews are all done by hand, because it is the highest-value hour in local search and it is the thing every cheap package automates badly.
This page is what happens to the calls. The AI marketing page is where the profile work lives.
How do you know the calls came from Google?
Google counts them for you. A Business Profile reports how many people rang you, how many clicked through to your website and how many asked for directions. Read them alongside what actually turned into work and you can see which half of the listing is earning.
Do I need a different phone number for this?
No. It works with the number already on your listing, and that matters more than it sounds: the number on your profile, your website and anywhere else you are listed should be the same one, or you are splitting your own trail.
Which trades and local services is it for?
Anybody who gets found on the map, which is every local business with a profile. It is worth most where somebody is choosing between two or three firms nearby and the first one to pick up wins.
Who gives the price?
You do, every time. She takes the details and tells them you will come back to them. On a first call from somebody comparing three firms, the quote stays yours and lands with a real number on it.
Can I answer some myself?
Yes, always. If you pick up, she is out of it. She is there for the ones you cannot get to.
Does answering quickly actually help?
With the customer, which is the part that pays. Somebody who gets an answer straight away rarely carries on down the list. On a listing where three firms sit side by side, that is the whole competition.
Where you sit on the map is decided by three things Google names itself. How well you match the search, how far away you are, and how well known you are. Two of those three are the profile work, and a person does it here by hand. What that work actually is.
What does it cost to run?
The setup and the monthly are on the price list. The call minutes are itemised on your bill so you can see exactly what they were, at 15p past your included minutes.
Is my data safe and is it GDPR compliant?
The calls and the details people give are yours. They sit in your own database on your own project, never pooled with anybody else's, never sold, and never used to sell anything. If you leave, you take them and we delete our copy.
Everything is encrypted on the way and at rest, and what is collected and why is set out in the privacy notice.
Does the listing matter for Google's own AI answers?
Your listing is the record Google holds of who your business is, and Google reads it as one. Google now writes an AI answer above the blue links on ordinary searches, and its own guide says those answers are built on the same ranking systems as everything else. So the listing and the website are one job rather than two.
- Name, address, telephone number and hours have to match between the listing and the site to the character. Two versions of one business is the commonest quiet fault in local search.
- The categories and services on the profile are stated facts, so filling them in properly gives something real to be matched on.
- There is a setting in Search Console that can shut a site out of Google's AI features with no other symptom at all. We look for it and make sure you are in, on accounts where Google has rolled it out.
Where else does she answer?
Your listing sends the call. She answers on all seven channels, in the same voice, and it all lands in the same place.
Phone answering
The phone picked up on the first ring when your hands are full.
Text messages
The ones that come in at nine at night asking if you do this.
Where they send you a photograph or a video of the problem.
The enquiry that arrives at midnight with three pictures on it.
Website live chat
Somebody stood on your website deciding whether to ring.
Facebook Messenger
Messages off your Facebook page, answered like the rest.
Instagram messages
The DM that follows somebody seeing a job you posted.
All seven together
What the AI receptionist is, and what the whole thing covers.
How many of your Google calls got answered last month?
Your profile counts them, and you may never have opened that screen. I will go through yours with you and tell you what I find.
Twenty minutes with Chad. Nothing to pay and nothing to sign. The whole receptionist, and all seven channels, are on the AI receptionist page.
